Macatawa Legends Golf & C.C. lives on in Holland, Mich.
Almost every beach town along Lake Michigan offers a good public golf course. Holland almost lost theirs. Macatawa Legends Golf & C.C., a Ray Hearn design, went into receivership in 2009, but you would never know it these days. Once the recession cleared, Macatawa Legends came back to life.

How good are you? Cutters' Ridge at Manistee National Golf & Resort separates the haves from the have-nots. This Jerry Matthews design from 2000 just might be the toughest course, yard for yard, in Michigan. Wetlands lurk seemingly everywhere, and its slope from the tips soars to 149.

Gary Pulsipher designed only a handful of golf courses in Michigan. His first -- Canthooke Valley at the Manistee National -- was, no doubt, his best. The course is routed through a secluded forest that let Pulsipher craft some creative opportunities in this natural setting.

Forest Dunes Golf Club wows players with top service, a massive Adirondack-style golf clubhouse, greens as good as any in the country and a course ranked no. 23 among the "Top 100 Public Golf Courses" by Golf Digest. The name implies all golfers need to know about the routing. Tom Weiskopf masterfully found corridors through the trees on the front nine, while the back meanders through more open meadows and sandy waste areas.

Michigan has so many good public golf courses that the big glossy golf mags just can't seem to decide which ones are most worthy of top-100 status. The roster of good public options is so deep there are plenty of other top-100-caliber courses -- even if they didn't land an invitation to the exclusive party this time.

Trouble lurks at the back of the property of Coyote Golf Club in New Hudson. A thick patch of forest hides the best stretch of golf -- holes 4-7. "We call it the Amen corner," said General Manager/Director of Golf Jason Raney. "Usually you can put together a good round if you get through there unscathed."

The owners at Mt. Brighton were a little late to the party in transforming their ski hill into a golf course. Popular in Michigan, ski hills provide the elevated tee shots golfers love. The challenge always is how to mix slopes and fairways without screwing up either sport. Jerry Matthews, who has designed more golf courses in Michigan than anyone, successfully weaved the two together at The Jackal Golf Club, for the most part.
